Annabel Hughes is simply one of the most effective communicators I have ever seen in action. With informed eloquence, appropriate wit and notable integrity, Ms. Hughes approaches her work prepared, connected and capable. I visited Zimbabwe repeatedly during Ms. Hughes' leadership of the Zimbabwe Democracy Trust and can attest to the brave, brilliant work she quietly set in motion both on the ground and in centers of Western power. It is thanks, in large part, to her timely, determined action that the voices of opposition in Zimbabwe have not been completely silenced — an incredible achievement in a country that is no stranger to the habit of oppression and war. Perhaps as astonishing is the efficiency with which she connected the most important voices of freedom and opposition in Zimbabwe with the most powerful, effective leaders in the west.
